Tragedy has struck Kamweli Village in Makutano, Mwea Sub-County, Embu County, after a young couple lost their lives in a heartbreaking incident that has left residents in disbelief.
The deceased have been identified as 31-year-old Christine Mbene and her 32-year-old husband, Lucas Muthusi.
According to family members, the tragedy unfolded moments after Christine was speaking on the phone with her mother, Esther Kanini. During the conversation, Christine suddenly ended the call after telling her mother that her husband wanted to discuss something important with her. When Esther tried calling back a few minutes later, her daughter’s phone went unanswered.
Unaware of what had transpired, the worried mother continued trying to reach her, only to later receive the devastating news.
Reports indicate that Lucas allegedly attacked Christine with an axe inside their home. After allegedly confirming that she had died, he is said to have swallowed poison, leading to his own death shortly afterward.
The shocking incident has left the quiet village mourning the loss of two young lives and raised fresh concerns about the devastating consequences of unresolved domestic disputes.
A close friend and neighbour, Triza Njeri, recalled her final moments with Christine, describing her as a kind and cheerful woman.
“She was my friend. On Wednesday, she left her younger child with me because she wanted to take her Grade Three daughter to a salon in Makutano, but they found it closed. She was a beautiful, friendly lady, and her husband was my former schoolmate,” Njeri said.
Another family member, Ms. Musyoka, revealed that the couple had been married for five years. She also disclosed that Christine had previously reported domestic problems at Makutano Police Post, suggesting that the marriage had been experiencing difficulties before the fatal incident.
The tragedy has sent shockwaves through the community, with residents expressing sorrow that such a young family has been torn apart. Many have also called for greater awareness and intervention in cases of domestic conflict before they escalate into irreversible tragedies.
The couple leaves behind children and grieving relatives who are now struggling to come to terms with the heartbreaking loss.
