Single Mother of Three Loses Her Sight While Hospitalised, Child’s KCSE Exams Hang in the Balance

A heartbreaking situation is unfolding for Norah Akello, a single mother of three, whose sudden health complications have left her fighting for her own recovery while worrying about the future of her child.
Norah is currently admitted at Kenyatta National Hospital (KNH), where she has been receiving medical attention after developing serious problems believed to be affecting her spinal cord. Her health struggles reportedly began with complications that included anal bleeding, prompting further medical investigations.
Doctors later determined that Norah needed to undergo a colonoscopy as they sought to establish the cause of her condition and determine the appropriate treatment.
However, while she was already battling the challenges of being in hospital, another devastating problem emerged.
Norah suddenly began losing her eyesight.
Her vision deteriorated to the point where she can no longer see, leaving the mother of three in an extremely difficult situation as she continues receiving treatment at KNH.
Amid the uncertainty surrounding her health, Norah received a phone call from her child’s school. The school was seeking to inform her about arrangements for her child, who is expected to sit for the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) examinations.
The timing could not have been more difficult.
With the national examinations expected to begin this month, Norah is faced with the painful reality that her child’s education could be affected by circumstances beyond the family’s control.
What makes the situation even more heartbreaking is that Norah had reportedly been trying to shield her child from the seriousness of her condition. She had not told the child that her health had deteriorated so severely, perhaps hoping to protect them from fear and anxiety at a time when they should have been concentrating on their examinations.
When the school called, Norah told the teacher that her older sister would come and collect the child.
The child is now at home, while Norah remains at KNH, unable to see.
The family has been left facing a difficult situation that requires urgent support, especially as the KCSE examinations draw closer. For a student who has spent years preparing for the crucial examinations, missing KCSE could have serious consequences for their education and future plans.
Behind the examination timetable is a mother lying in a hospital bed, desperately hoping to regain her sight and return to her children. And at home is a child whose examination dreams now appear uncertain because of a family crisis they never expected.
Norah’s story is a painful reminder of how quickly life can change. A parent can wake up expecting to support their child through one of the most important stages of their education, only to find themselves battling a health crisis that makes even the simplest responsibilities impossible.
At this difficult moment, the family needs prayers, compassion and support from well-wishers. They are hoping that Norah will receive the medical attention she needs, regain her eyesight and reunite with her children.
Most importantly, they are hoping that a way will be found for the child to sit the KCSE examinations despite the circumstances facing the family.
May God strengthen Norah and her children during this difficult season, provide the resources needed for her treatment, restore her eyesight and open a way where there seems to be none.
For this family, the hope is simple: healing for their mother, strength for the children and an opportunity for the student to sit the examinations they have worked so hard to prepare for.
