A dark cloud of grief has descended on Ilesi village in Shinyalu Constituency, Kakamega County, after a 25-year-old woman was allegedly hacked to death by her brother-in-law in a shocking attack that also left her four-year-old child critically injured.
The deceased, identified as Patience Penenzi, was reportedly attacked on Thursday, September 24, as she accompanied her young child to school.
What should have been an ordinary morning turned into a nightmare within moments.
According to reports from the area, Penenzi encountered her brother-in-law, Desmond Kirishi, who allegedly attacked her with a panga. The weapon was reportedly used several times during the assault, leaving the young mother with severe injuries.
Her four-year-old child was also caught up in the horrifying incident and sustained serious injuries.
The child was rushed to Mukumu Hospital, where the young victim was reportedly receiving treatment in critical condition.
The tragedy has left residents struggling to understand how a family dispute could escalate into such devastating violence.
Penenzi had reportedly been living in the same compound as Kirishi while her husband worked in Qatar. Residents claim that the relationship between the two had been strained for some time, with the suspect allegedly causing difficulties for his sister-in-law.
Locals further alleged that Kirishi had a history of substance abuse and had previously been involved in troubling activities in the area. These claims, however, remain allegations and will have to be established through investigations and, where applicable, court proceedings.
The Chief of Ilesi Location, Ben Mulinya, reportedly described the suspect as a person who had previously been associated with criminal activities and alleged links to illegal gangs.
Following the attack, Kirishi reportedly fled the scene, triggering a frantic search as residents and security officers attempted to locate him.
He was eventually apprehended in Kakamega Town. Police officers reportedly intervened after an angry crowd caught up with the suspect and rescued him from the mob.
His arrest brought an end to the immediate manhunt, but it could not erase the devastation left behind.
For Penenzi’s family, the loss has created an unbearable void. A young woman who had left home to accompany her child to school never returned, while her husband, away from home for work, was left to confront the devastating news from thousands of kilometres away.
The condition of the injured child has also deepened the anguish surrounding the incident, with relatives and residents anxiously hoping for the child’s recovery.
As police continue with investigations, the circumstances surrounding the attack are expected to form part of the case against the suspect.
Meanwhile, Ilesi residents remain shaken by the violence, mourning a young mother whose life was allegedly cut short in a brutal attack and praying for the survival of the child who witnessed and suffered the consequences of the tragedy.
