The National Youth Service (NYS) has reopened recruitment for 10 cadet-chaplain positions, giving qualified Kenyans from four major religious groupings another opportunity to join the service on permanent and pensionable terms.
The vacancies, advertised through MyGov, are aimed at strengthening spiritual and pastoral support within the NYS. The available positions have been distributed across Catholic, Protestant, Seventh-day Adventist and Muslim faiths.
Of the 10 positions, three are reserved for Catholic chaplains, three for Protestant chaplains, two for Seventh-day Adventist chaplains and two for Muslim maalims.
Successful candidates will be employed on permanent and pensionable terms and will be covered under the Social Health Authority (SHA) Scheme for Civil Servants. Their remuneration will be based on the existing NYS salary structure.
Who is eligible to apply?
The NYS has set several requirements for applicants seeking the coveted positions.
Applicants must be Kenyan citizens aged between 27 and 36 years and must possess a valid national identity card and KRA PIN certificate. They must also have no criminal record, be medically fit and meet the integrity requirements contained in Chapter Six of the Constitution.
On academic qualifications, candidates must hold a bachelor’s degree in a recognised discipline. The accepted areas of study include Sacred Theology, Christian Philosophy, Pastoral Theology, Theology, Theology and Bible, Divinity, Islamic Studies and Arabic Studies (Jasmi’yyah), among other equivalent qualifications obtained from recognised institutions.
However, academic qualifications alone will not be enough.
Applicants must also have a Certificate of Ordination, a valid government practising licence and a recommendation letter from the head of their respective church or mosque.
The religious institution recommending an applicant must be affiliated with one of the recognised umbrella organisations, including the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KECB), National Council of Churches of Kenya (NCCK), Evangelical Alliance of Kenya (EAK), East African Union of Seventh-day Adventists (EAU/WAU), or the Supreme Council of Kenya Muslims (SUPKEM).
The re-advertisement provides another opportunity for suitably qualified religious leaders who meet the NYS requirements to pursue a career serving both the institution and its personnel through spiritual guidance and pastoral support.
