What began as an ordinary night at a bar in Marani, Kisii County, ended in tragedy after a suspected love triangle allegedly sparked a violent confrontation that left two men dead.
The incident unfolded on Monday night at Club Dados Bar, where Bonface Amwoma Okeyo was allegedly stabbed inside one of the bar’s toilets.
According to police, the drama was reported by a 21-year-old female employee at the establishment after she was alerted by a female customer identified only as “Sister.”
The woman reportedly told her that a man had been stabbed inside one of the toilets and was lying seriously injured. She also revealed that the alleged attacker had locked himself inside another toilet.
Police officers were quickly dispatched to the scene, where they found the injured Okeyo.
He had already been rushed to Nyangena Hospital in Kisii town on a boda boda in an attempt to save his life. Tragically, the effort came too late.
Okeyo was pronounced dead on arrival.
Police said he had suffered a single stab wound to the left side of his chest, believed to have been inflicted using a sharp object.
But the night of violence did not end there.
The man suspected of stabbing Okeyo, identified as Dennis Mayaka Asago, had reportedly locked himself inside another toilet in an apparent attempt to escape the angry crowd.
Members of the public, however, eventually forced their way in and reportedly subjected him to mob justice.
Asago sustained serious injuries during the assault and later succumbed to his injuries, turning the incident into a double tragedy.
Police officers processed the scene and recovered the bodies of the two men. Okeyo’s body was taken to the Nyangena Hospital mortuary, while Asago’s remains were taken to the Marani Sub-County Referral Hospital mortuary, where they await post-mortem examinations.
Preliminary investigations suggest that a dispute involving an unidentified woman may have triggered the confrontation between the two men, raising suspicions that a love triangle could be at the centre of the deadly encounter.
However, police have not conclusively established the motive, and investigations remain ongoing.
The suspected murder weapon had not been recovered by Tuesday, with detectives continuing their search as they piece together what happened inside the bar that fateful night.
Investigators are now examining both the alleged stabbing and the subsequent mob attack that claimed the life of the suspected attacker.
The double death has once again raised concerns over violence allegedly linked to romantic disputes in parts of Kisii, with police warning against taking the law into one’s own hands.
