The shocking murder of Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso has taken a dramatic turn after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) confirmed that a serving police officer allegedly pulled the trigger in the killing.
DCI Director Mohamed Amin said investigators had identified Police Constable Elijah Kibelion Kimoi, attached to Karinde Police Post under Kikuyu Police Station, as the suspected gunman in the carefully planned shooting that claimed the doctor’s life in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area.
Kimoi has since been arrested as detectives intensify investigations into the circumstances surrounding the killing and work to establish everyone who may have been involved in the deadly operation.
The revelation has raised serious questions about the involvement of members of the security forces in a crime that has shocked the public.
Amin described the alleged participation of serving police officers in the murder as a “grave betrayal of the uniform and the public trust,” underscoring the seriousness with which investigators are treating the case.
According to investigators, the suspected plot went beyond the alleged gunman.
A police inspector attached to Nderi Police Post is also being sought in connection with the murder. Detectives allege that the inspector supplied the firearm used in the killing and served as an important link between the alleged financiers and the team that carried out the execution.
The inspector, however, remains at large, with detectives continuing their efforts to trace and apprehend him.
Investigators have also made a significant breakthrough in establishing the weapon used in the killing.
The suspected murder weapon, identified as a Mini Jericho pistol, was recovered from Nderi Police Post. Forensic examinations have allegedly linked the firearm to cartridges recovered at the crime scene as well as a bullet retrieved during Dr. Mutiso’s post-mortem examination.
The forensic evidence could prove crucial as detectives seek to piece together the events leading to the doctor’s death and determine the precise roles played by each suspect.
Dr. Mutiso was shot on July 29, 2026, while travelling in an Uber in Nairobi’s Upper Hill area. The attack left her with three gunshot wounds.
Despite being rushed to Kenyatta National Hospital for emergency treatment, the doctor succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead.
Her killing sparked widespread concern, particularly because it occurred in the capital city and allegedly involved individuals entrusted with protecting the public.
The latest revelations have now transformed the investigation, with detectives looking beyond the person who allegedly fired the shots to uncover the people who may have planned, financed, facilitated or ordered the killing.
The arrest of Constable Kimoi and the recovery of the alleged murder weapon are expected to provide investigators with critical leads as they pursue the wider network behind Dr. Mutiso’s death.
With the alleged police inspector still on the run and questions surrounding the identity of the financiers yet to be fully answered, attention is now firmly focused on the next phase of the investigation.
For Dr. Mutiso’s family, however, the revelations come amid the painful loss of a loved one whose life was cut short in a violent attack.
As detectives continue following the evidence, the central question remains: Who planned the killing, who financed it, and what motive lay behind the fatal attack on Dr. Victoria Nthunya Mutiso?
