What began as a routine evening errand turned into a nightmare for the family of 18-year-old Form Four student Quince Wanjiru Wanyee, whose disappearance triggered an anxious search that lasted for more than a week.
Quince, a private KCSE candidate preparing to sit her final secondary school examinations later this year, disappeared on the evening of July 23, 2026, after leaving her family home in the Kenyatta Road area of Thika.
At around 6:30 p.m., she reportedly left the house behind Icon Gardens, off Thika Road, to buy a few items from a nearby shop. It was supposed to be a short trip.
But Quince never came back.
As the hours turned into days, the family’s concern grew into anguish. Relatives, friends and well-wishers joined the search, circulating her photograph and details in the hope that someone, somewhere, had seen her.
Her disappearance also raised fears about what could have happened to the young student who was preparing for one of the most important examinations of her life.
At the time she went missing, Quince was wearing blue sweatpants, an orange jumper and grey Crocs. Her hair was styled in plaited line braids, with rasta braids at the back.
For nearly ten days, her family lived with uncertainty, desperately waiting for any information that could lead them to her whereabouts.
Then came the breakthrough they had been praying for.
Quince was traced to a house in Nairobi, where she was allegedly being held against her will. An operation was mounted, resulting in her safe rescue.
The discovery brought immense relief to her family, who had spent days wondering whether they would ever see her again.
According to her mother, a suspect believed to have been involved in detaining Quince was arrested and placed in police custody. Detectives are now investigating the circumstances surrounding the teenager’s disappearance and alleged detention.
Following her rescue, Quince was scheduled to undergo a medical examination at a hospital to establish her physical condition and ensure that she receives any care she may need after the ordeal.
For her family, however, the most important news was simple: she was alive.
