A cloud of grief has descended over Kakamega County following the heartbreaking death of a young police officer who was counting down to one of the happiest moments of his life before tragedy struck.

Police Constable Samwel Barasa lost his life in a horrific road accident in Nairobi, barely two months before he was set to exchange vows with the love of his life in a wedding that family and friends had eagerly anticipated.
The devastating accident occurred on Friday, June 5, along the busy Waiyaki Way highway, bringing to an abrupt end the life of a man many described as hardworking, humble, and dedicated to serving his country.
According to preliminary reports, Barasa was on duty and riding a police motorcycle while pursuing a boda boda rider when the tragedy unfolded. Witnesses say the officer was navigating a section of the highway when a speeding vehicle allegedly struck him.
The impact left him with severe injuries, prompting an immediate response from emergency personnel and fellow officers who rushed to the scene. Despite their efforts, Barasa succumbed to his injuries, leaving behind shattered dreams and a family struggling to come to terms with the painful loss.
News of his sudden death spread rapidly, triggering an outpouring of grief from colleagues, relatives, friends, and members of the public who knew him as a committed officer who carried out his duties with passion and professionalism.
However, what has touched many hearts most is the fact that Barasa was preparing to begin a new chapter in his life.
The young officer was scheduled to marry his fiancée, Susan Luswet, on August 8, 2026, in a colorful church wedding at Nyanga Catholic Parish. The couple had already shared invitations with family members, friends, and loved ones, inviting them to witness the joyous occasion.
Now, the wedding invitation card that once symbolized hope, love, and a bright future has become a painful reminder of a life cut short too soon.
Friends close to the couple say Barasa and Susan shared a deep bond and had been excitedly planning their future together. From wedding preparations to discussions about their dreams as husband and wife, the couple was looking forward to building a life filled with love and happiness.
Both families had reportedly intensified preparations for the ceremony, with arrangements progressing smoothly as the wedding date drew closer. No one imagined that the celebrations would be replaced by mourning and heartbreak.
As the reality of his death sinks in, messages of condolence continue to pour in from across the country. Many have described the incident as a cruel twist of fate that robbed a young couple of their future and denied a community one of its promising sons.
For Susan, the pain is almost unimaginable. Instead of preparing for a wedding ceremony, she now finds herself mourning the man she had hoped to spend the rest of her life with.
As family, friends, and colleagues struggle to process the tragedy, one thing remains clear: Samwel Barasa’s death has left a void that will be difficult to fill, and a wedding that was meant to be a celebration of love will forever remain an unfulfilled dream.
