A routine excavation job at Chinche Primary School in Kiabonyoru, Kebirigo, Nyamira County, turned into a heartbreaking tragedy after a series of sand collapses claimed the lives of four people in a devastating accident that has left the local community in shock.

According to reports from the scene, the tragedy began when two men working inside an excavation pit became trapped after a huge heap of loose sand suddenly caved in, burying them beneath the debris. Panic quickly spread as residents and fellow workers rushed to the site in a desperate effort to rescue the victims before it was too late.
Rescuers managed to pull out the first victim alive after an intense operation. He was immediately rushed to Nyamira County Referral Hospital for emergency medical treatment as hopes remained high that the second trapped man could also be saved.
However, the rescue mission took a tragic turn when the tractor being used to remove the sand suddenly ran out of fuel. The unexpected setback brought the operation to a standstill, costing precious minutes as the second victim remained trapped beneath the collapsing soil.
With time running out and fearing that the trapped man would not survive any longer, three courageous men made the selfless decision to climb into the unstable pit and assist in the rescue effort manually. But as they worked, disaster struck once again.
Without warning, another massive section of loose sand gave way, crashing down on everyone inside the excavation site. The second collapse buried the rescuers alongside the trapped victim, turning what had been a rescue mission into an unimaginable catastrophe.
Despite frantic efforts by residents and emergency responders to dig through the sand, all four men were later confirmed dead.
The heartbreaking incident has plunged families into mourning and left residents of Kiabonyoru reeling in grief. Many gathered at the scene in disbelief as rescue teams recovered the bodies, with emotional relatives and neighbours struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss.
The tragedy has also renewed concerns about safety measures at excavation and mining sites, with locals calling for stricter enforcement of safety regulations to prevent similar disasters. Questions are now being raised about whether adequate precautions had been put in place before work began and whether the rescue operation could have been better equipped to avoid such a heartbreaking outcome.
Authorities are expected to investigate the circumstances surrounding the accident as the community mourns four lives lost in a tragedy that began as a rescue mission but ended in unimaginable sorrow.
