What Student at mangu high school was caught saying on camera

A video capturing moments after an attempted unrest at Mang’u High School has surfaced online, triggering widespread debate and mixed reactions among Kenyans on social media.

The clip, recorded at night within the school’s compound, shows groups of students gathered in animated discussions shortly after administrators reportedly intervened to prevent a planned strike from escalating. While school authorities moved swiftly to restore calm and maintain order, the atmosphere among some learners appeared surprisingly cheerful.

Mang’u High School, one of Kenya’s most prestigious national schools, found itself in the spotlight after reports emerged that a section of students had been planning to stage a strike. Although the disturbance was contained before any major damage or violence occurred, school leaders decided to take precautionary measures to safeguard the welfare of learners.

In a communication addressed to parents on June 4, Principal Bernard King’ah explained that the decision to release students had been reached after consultations involving the Board of Management (BOM), the Parents Association (PA), and the school administration.

“The BOM, PA and school administration have agreed that we release all students on June 5 at 6:00 am to ease the tension as a precautionary measure and safeguard the safety of all students,” the principal stated.

However, it is the students’ reaction to the development that has generated the most attention online.

In the viral video, one learner can be heard enthusiastically narrating the unfolding events while recording his fellow students. Around him, dozens of boys stand in small groups, chatting and laughing despite the uncertainty surrounding the situation.

Some students appeared excited by the prospect of an early departure from school. Their voices echoed through the dark compound as they celebrated what they believed would be an unexpected break from classes.

“We are on strike. Tomorrow, expect us home. We are going home!” one student shouted excitedly, prompting loud cheers and laughter from others nearby.

The footage quickly spread across social media platforms, where it attracted thousands of comments. Many viewers expressed disappointment at the apparent excitement displayed by some learners, arguing that school disruptions negatively affect education and place unnecessary burdens on parents.

Others focused on a different issue altogether — the presence of a mobile phone inside the school. Several users questioned how a student managed to record and share the footage, given that most Kenyan secondary schools have strict rules prohibiting the use of personal phones by learners.

Meanwhile, some parents sympathized with families who would have to make unexpected travel arrangements and adjustments following the abrupt closure. Others praised the school administration for acting early, saying preventive action was preferable to waiting until the situation deteriorated into violence or destruction of property.

As discussions continue online, the incident has once again highlighted the growing challenge schools face in managing student unrest while balancing safety, discipline, and the welfare of learners. For many Kenyans, the viral video serves as a reminder that even the country’s most respected institutions are not immune to the tensions that occasionally arise within school environments.
