What began as a routine traffic stop on a quiet road in Nyandarua County ended in heartbreaking tragedy after a retired teacher collapsed and died while in police custody, leaving his family and the public searching for answers.

The deceased, identified as Mr. Kirathe, was driving his Toyota Probox along the Dundori–Oljororok road near Mirangine when police officers flagged him down during a traffic enforcement operation. Officers alleged that he had committed several traffic offences and escorted both him and his vehicle to Mirangine Police Station for further inspection.
At the station, police discovered that although the vehicle displayed what appeared to be a valid insurance sticker, it had already expired. The discrepancy raised suspicions of possible fraud, prompting officers to refer the case to the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) for further questioning.
However, what happened next shocked everyone.
While being interrogated at the DCI offices, Mr. Kirathe suddenly collapsed. Police officers immediately rushed him to a nearby hospital in a desperate attempt to save his life, but doctors sadly pronounced him dead on arrival.
The incident quickly sparked concern because the retired teacher had died while under police custody, automatically triggering investigations to establish the exact cause of death and determine whether any foul play was involved.
An autopsy was later carried out in the presence of police officers, officials from the Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA), and members of Mr. Kirathe’s family to ensure transparency throughout the process.
The postmortem findings revealed that Mr. Kirathe died from natural causes linked to an underlying heart condition. According to the medical report, his heart was significantly enlarged, a condition associated with long-standing hypertension. Doctors also found that his kidneys had shrunk, indicating chronic health complications. A bruise on the heart suggested he had likely suffered a heart attack.
Importantly, the examination found no visible injuries or signs of physical assault on his body, effectively ruling out foul play.
Following the release of the postmortem report, a family spokesperson said the relatives had accepted the medical findings and were satisfied with the outcome of the investigation. Police also confirmed that the matter had been concluded based on the doctors’ report, bringing to a close a case that had initially raised serious public concern over a death that occurred while a suspect was in police custody.
Although the investigations have ruled out foul play, Mr. Kirathe’s sudden death serves as a painful reminder of how quickly life can change, turning an ordinary traffic stop into a tragedy that has left a family mourning the loss of a loved one.
