Photos of Maseno professor found dead and why he was killed

A cloud of grief and fear has descended on Homa Bay County after a respected Maseno University professor was found brutally murdered just outside his home in a chilling incident that has left residents in shock.

The victim, identified as Daniel Odhiambo Odondi, a 54-year-old professor at Maseno University, was discovered lying motionless outside the gate to his residence on Saturday night. His body was found in a pool of blood, with investigators describing the attack as particularly violent.

According to police, Professor Odondi had sustained deep cut wounds to the neck as well as multiple severe injuries to the head, indicating that his attackers used a sharp weapon. The nature of the injuries has led detectives to believe that the killing was deliberate and executed with extreme brutality.

Officers who responded to the scene secured the area before carrying out a detailed forensic examination. Detectives documented the scene as they began piecing together the professor’s final moments in an effort to establish exactly what transpired before his death.

Preliminary investigations point to a possible long-running land dispute involving individuals believed to have been known to the deceased. However, police have emphasized that no theory has been ruled out and that investigators are pursuing every possible lead to identify those responsible for the murder.

Following the examination of the scene, Professor Odondi’s body was transferred to the Rachuonyo Sub-County Referral Hospital mortuary, where it awaits a postmortem examination that is expected to provide additional information about the circumstances surrounding his death.

Police have since launched a manhunt for the suspects, expressing confidence that ongoing investigations will lead to arrests. Authorities are also appealing to members of the public with any information that could assist in the investigation to come forward.

Land-related conflicts have remained one of the leading causes of violent crimes in parts of Homa Bay County, with several fatal incidents reported over the years. Police say they are intensifying efforts to address such disputes before they escalate into deadly confrontations.

Another Body Found in Kakamega

In a separate incident, detectives in Matungu Sub-County, Kakamega County, have launched investigations into the mysterious death of a 28-year-old man whose body was discovered abandoned along a feeder road in Bukananachi Village.

The deceased was identified as Richard Odhiambo Ngala, whose family had reported him missing after realizing he was not at his usual sleeping place when they woke up at around 5:00 a.m.

According to police, the killing is believed to have occurred during the night between June 26 and June 27, 2026, before the body was discovered and the incident reported to authorities on Saturday.

Detectives visited the scene and began collecting evidence as they worked to determine the circumstances surrounding Ngala’s death. His body was later moved to the mortuary pending a postmortem examination.

Police have appealed to anyone with information that may help unravel the mystery behind the killing to cooperate with investigators as efforts continue to bring those responsible to justice.
