What began as a hopeful journey toward a better future has ended in heartbreak for a family in Isinya, Kajiado County, after learning that their 29-year-old son allegedly died on a battlefield thousands of kilometres away in Russia.

Enock Mboi, a P1 teacher, husband, and father of one, left Kenya in November 2025 believing he was headed to Qatar for a lucrative security job that would transform the fortunes of his young family. Instead, his loved ones say he mysteriously found himself in Russia and was later recruited into military service before allegedly losing his life in the ongoing conflict.
The devastating revelation has left his family struggling to comprehend how a trained teacher ended up carrying a gun in a foreign war.
According to relatives, Enock was recruited through an agency that promised him employment opportunities in Qatar. Encouraged by the prospect of a better income, his family borrowed money to facilitate his travel arrangements, convinced that his departure would mark the beginning of a brighter future.
However, shortly after leaving Kenya on November 1, 2025, Enock contacted his wife, Christine, with disturbing news.
Initially, he informed her that his journey had unexpectedly changed course and that he was no longer certain where he was being taken. A short while later, he called again with a shocking update—he had arrived in Russia.
The news stunned his family, who had believed he was travelling to the Middle East.
As weeks passed, their fears deepened. Enock’s mother, Monicah Moraa, recalled receiving a video call from her son dressed in military uniform and carrying a rifle. The sight left her speechless.
She questioned him repeatedly, wondering why a teacher who had travelled abroad for employment was suddenly dressed like a soldier. Her concerns grew even more when Enock reportedly revealed that he and others were undergoing brief military training before being deployed.
According to his mother, Enock’s response was simple but chilling.
“Mom, pray for me.”
Those words would haunt the family in the months that followed.
Despite the troubling circumstances, Enock continued communicating with his loved ones through Telegram. During their conversations, he reportedly described the harsh conditions he was enduring.
His wife said he often complained about the freezing weather, which affected his health, and the difficult working environment that made life increasingly unbearable. More importantly, he frequently expressed a desire to return home.
For months, the family clung to hope, comforted by the fact that they could still hear his voice.
Then, on March 31, 2026, everything changed. Enock suddenly stopped responding to messages and calls.
Days turned into weeks, and weeks into months. The family waited anxiously for any sign that he was safe.
Then, on April 26, Christine received a strange message written entirely in Russian. Believing it could be a scam, she ignored it. Soon after, the same number called repeatedly.
Unable to answer, she handed the phone to her sister.
What followed shattered the family’s hopes.
The caller asked whether she knew Enock. When she confirmed she was speaking on behalf of his family, the caller delivered the devastating words no family ever wants to hear.
“Please accept my condolences.”
In that moment, the family’s worst fears became reality.
Now overwhelmed by grief, Enock’s relatives are desperately seeking answers. They have appealed to the Kenyan government to intervene and help bring his body home so that he can receive a dignified burial among his loved ones.
The family says they have already reported the matter to the Russian Embassy in Nairobi and informed local authorities, but they are still waiting for official communication regarding his fate.
As they mourn, painful questions remain unanswered. How did a young teacher who left home in search of opportunity end up on a battlefield in Russia? Who facilitated his journey? And could his tragic fate have been prevented?
For Enock’s family, those answers may never erase the pain. What remains is the memory of a husband, a father, a son, and a teacher whose dream of providing a better life for his family ended in a tragedy far from home.
