Brave form 4 girl who died trying to save others

A family in Nakuru is grieving the heartbreaking loss of their daughter, Cecilia Wanjiku, a bright and courageous Form Four student who reportedly lost her life while attempting to save fellow students during the deadly dormitory fire at Utumishi Girls Senior School in Gilgil.

As painful details continue to emerge from the tragedy that claimed multiple young lives, Cecilia’s story has stood out as one of courage, selflessness, and sacrifice.

According to her devastated family, Cecilia could have focused on saving herself when the fire broke out in the middle of the night. Instead, witnesses say she chose to help other terrified students escape from the burning dormitory as panic and confusion spread through the school.

Relatives say Cecilia is believed to have sustained fatal injuries while trying to rescue others trapped inside the building as flames rapidly engulfed sections of the dormitory.

“She was trying to help other girls escape,” a family member painfully recounted. “That is the kind of person Cecilia was — caring, brave, and always thinking about others before herself.”

Surviving students described horrifying scenes inside the dormitory as smoke filled the rooms and frightened girls desperately searched for escape routes. Amid the chaos, Cecilia reportedly remained calm and focused on helping her fellow students get out safely.

Her death has left her family, friends, and teachers shattered, especially because she was a young girl full of promise and academic excellence.

Cecilia’s educational journey reflected determination and brilliance from an early age. She reportedly scored an impressive 399 marks in her KCPE examinations while at Gilgil Highway Primary School, earning admiration from teachers and classmates alike.

She later joined Karima Girls High School before transferring to Utumishi Girls Senior School, where she continued to excel academically. According to those close to her, science subjects were her strength, and her lowest grade was reportedly a B+.

Teachers say Cecilia was disciplined, hardworking, and focused on building a bright future. Just days before the tragedy, she had proudly been selected to represent her school in a biology competition scheduled to take place at Amref University on Saturday, June 6.

To her family, the news of her death feels unbearable because they had high hopes for her future.

“She had dreams. She worked hard. We believed she would become someone great in society,” another relative said through tears.

As the nation mourns the victims of the Utumishi Girls fire tragedy, Cecilia Wanjiku is being remembered not only as an intelligent student but also as a hero who risked her own life trying to save others.

Her bravery in those final moments has touched many hearts across the country, turning her into a symbol of courage born in the middle of unimaginable tragedy.
