A 54-year-old man, identified as Patrick Steve Odhiambo, has died in an apparent suicide following the reported breakdown of his relationship with his girlfriend.
Odhiambo’s death has left family members, friends and those who knew him mourning, with the contents of a letter he reportedly left behind offering a glimpse into the emotional turmoil he was experiencing before his death.
In the letter, Odhiambo reportedly described years of sacrifice and financial support for his girlfriend, Wambui, whom he said he had helped throughout her college education.
According to his account, he paid her tuition fees and supported her until she successfully completed her studies. He said he made the sacrifices with the hope that their relationship would eventually lead to a shared future.
Odhiambo reportedly explained that despite his financial struggles, he continued living in Korogocho, Nairobi, while supporting Wambui’s education. His hope, according to the letter, was that after she graduated, she would also stand by him and that the two would build a life together.
However, the relationship reportedly took a painful turn after Wambui completed her studies.
Odhiambo claimed in his letter that she eventually entered into another relationship with a man she considered more suitable for her. He further alleged that she told him he was “not her class” and that she considered him too old.
He also reportedly said that Wambui questioned why he had reached the age of 54 without getting married.
The alleged remarks and the collapse of a relationship in which Odhiambo said he had invested years of emotional and financial support reportedly left him deeply distressed.
His death has since sparked grief among those who knew him, while his story has also prompted conversations about heartbreak, expectations in relationships and the emotional struggles that people may face privately.
Family members and friends are now appealing for financial assistance to help transport Odhiambo’s remains to his rural home, where he is expected to be laid to rest.
