What began as an ordinary day for the Onwu family in Enugu State, Nigeria, ended in devastating tragedy after a massive concrete water reservoir collapsed onto their home, killing five members of the same family.
The heartbreaking incident occurred on Thursday, September 18, in Awgu Local Government Area, leaving the family trapped beneath tons of concrete and debris.
Among those who lost their lives were a husband, his wife, the husband’s mother and two children.
The victims were reportedly inside their home when the concrete structure, attached to a neighbouring building that was under construction, suddenly gave way. Within moments, the family home was crushed beneath the collapsing structure, leaving little chance for those trapped inside to escape.
The collapse caused extensive damage to the residence and triggered a desperate rescue operation as efforts were launched to locate the occupants buried under the rubble.
Rescuers eventually recovered the five victims from the wreckage. They were rushed to hospital, where they were confirmed dead.
Their bodies were later transferred to a mortuary for preservation and autopsy as authorities began investigating the circumstances surrounding the deadly collapse.
Property Owner Arrested
Following the tragedy, the Enugu State Police Command arrested the owner of the property to which the concrete reservoir was attached.
Police spokesperson DSP Daniel Ndukwe identified the detained property owner as Onyedikachi Nkwo.
Investigators are now working to establish what caused the concrete reservoir to collapse and whether proper construction procedures and safety standards were followed.
Enugu State Commissioner of Police Bitrus Giwa ordered a thorough investigation into the incident, saying authorities would take appropriate action once the circumstances surrounding the deaths had been established.
Giwa also conveyed his condolences to the bereaved family and the wider community, which has been left mourning the loss of five members of one household.
The police boss warned property developers and residents against cutting corners when putting up buildings or installing heavy structures.
He stressed the importance of adhering to approved construction standards and urged developers to work with qualified professionals to ensure that structures are properly designed, constructed and inspected before they are occupied or put into use.
Questions Over Construction Safety
The deaths have renewed concerns about construction safety, particularly in situations where heavy concrete structures are erected close to occupied residential houses.
Investigators are expected to examine the collapsed building, the concrete reservoir and other structural factors as they seek to determine exactly why the structure failed.
For the Onwu family, however, the investigation comes after an unimaginable loss: five members of one household gone in a single devastating incident, leaving relatives and neighbours struggling to come to terms with the tragedy.
