Every year, thousands of Kenyan youth try their luck in joining the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). The exercise involves a number of gruesome activities most of which are aimed at checking at the physique. However, what happens when your dreams are crushed because you miss one tooth or even worse, you have all teeth but they are yellow?
This is one of the metrics used during recruitment and many Kenyans have never understood why this is a requirement. This has been explained by various stakeholders in the security industry. In a past interview, Mr. Mbijiwe, a former member of the Kenya Defense Forces revealed why this is a crucial condition.
He revealed that a soldier can use his teeth as a weapon just in case he runs out of ammunition. He further explained that a soldier can use the teeth to tear the enemy into pieces. I would love to explain how but that is a question only soldiers can answer
Another reason provided by one of the recruitment officers is that a soldier may be deployed to dry areas and forced to survive on very small rations. This can only be achieved by someone with a strong set of teeth.
Those with yellow teeth are turned away because it is a pointer of someone with weak bones. The yellowing of teeth is attributed to overexposure to fluoride which can be found in places such as Eldama Ravine.
Other requirements needed before one is recruited include Kenyan citizenship with relevant Identification card. Relevant weight and height different for men and women. One is also required to be free of any criminal record
