University student kills coursemate after fight over girlfriend in university event

A night that began as an ordinary university outing ended in tragedy after a 20-year-old student was allegedly stabbed and later died from his injuries in Murang’a town.

Kelvin Murimi, a second-year student at Murang’a University of Technology, reportedly suffered a fatal stab wound in the early hours of Saturday, October 3, 2026, after attending an event at the university.

According to preliminary police reports, the incident occurred at about 5am in the VM area of Murang’a town as Murimi was heading home after the event.

What happened during those final moments remains the subject of an ongoing investigation.

Police said Murimi was able to indicate before his death that he had allegedly been attacked by a fellow student following a disagreement reportedly linked to a love triangle.

The exact circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including what triggered the alleged disagreement and how it escalated into violence, had not been fully established as investigations continued.

Murimi was rushed to Murang’a Level Five Hospital in critical condition. However, his injuries were too severe, and he later succumbed.

Police officers from Murang’a Police Station, together with detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, visited the hospital after receiving information about the incident. They confirmed that the young student had died while receiving treatment.

Investigators established that Murimi had sustained a deep stab wound to the left side of his abdomen. He had also suffered severe blood loss, according to the preliminary findings.

The death has sent shockwaves through the university community, where Murimi was pursuing a Bachelor of Science degree in Economics.

At just 20 years old, the second-year student had many years ahead of him and was working towards completing his university education. His sudden death has now left his family, friends and fellow students grappling with the loss.

The incident also raises fresh questions about how a disagreement among young people could allegedly escalate into a deadly confrontation.

Following the incident, scene-of-crime officers processed and documented the relevant evidence as detectives began piecing together what happened before, during and after the alleged attack.

Investigators are expected to establish the circumstances that led to the confrontation, identify those involved and determine the events that culminated in Murimi sustaining the fatal injury.

The alleged involvement of a fellow student remains part of the police investigation, and the circumstances and motive have not been conclusively established by a court.

Murimi’s body was moved to and preserved at the Murang’a Level Five Hospital mortuary pending a post-mortem examination.

For his loved ones, however, the questions surrounding his final hours are likely to linger.

He had gone to a university event like many other young students, expecting to return home afterward. Instead, the early morning journey ended with a fatal confrontation and the loss of a young life.

As detectives continue their investigations, Murimi’s family and friends are left mourning a promising student whose life was tragically cut short at the age of 20.
