Tears as University student set to Graduate dies

The halls of Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) have been engulfed in grief following the heartbreaking death of one of its students, Precious Chepchichir, whose dream of becoming a teacher came to a tragic end just one year before she was set to graduate.

Precious, a Bachelor of Education (Arts) student, had endured years of battling a serious heart condition while pursuing her studies. Despite the physical pain, repeated hospital visits, and the emotional burden of living with a chronic illness, she remained determined to complete her university education and build a brighter future.

Friends say giving up was never an option for her.

From the day she joined the university, Precious fought two battles at once—earning her degree while struggling with a heart condition that frequently interrupted her studies. She reportedly underwent surgery and remained on medication, courageously balancing lectures, assignments, and examinations with countless medical appointments.

Those close to her recall a young woman who refused to allow illness to define her. Even when her health deteriorated, she continued to hold onto the hope that one day she would stand before a classroom and inspire learners through her love for English Literature.

Sadly, her condition took a turn for the worse in recent days.

She was admitted to South Rift Hospital in Kericho County for specialized treatment, where doctors worked to stabilize her condition. Despite their efforts, Precious passed away while receiving medical care, leaving behind devastated family members, classmates, lecturers, and friends.

News of her passing spread rapidly across the university, plunging the MMUST community into mourning. Messages of sorrow poured in as fellow students remembered her as kind-hearted, resilient, and deeply committed to achieving her dreams despite the enormous health challenges she faced.

Many described her death as especially painful because she had already overcome so many obstacles and was only one academic year away from earning the degree she had fought so hard to attain.

Her passing serves as a painful reminder of the silent battles many students fight while pursuing their education—struggles that often go unnoticed by those around them.

As friends gather to mourn and celebrate her life, they remember not just a student, but a courageous young woman whose determination inspired everyone who knew her.

Though she will never wear the graduation gown she longed for, those whose lives she touched say her resilience, strength, and unwavering hope will remain part of her legacy.
