SURPRISING USES OF ONIONS OTHER THAN COOKING

Onions don’t normally spring to mind as a go-to natural cleaner and/or food preserve, but after reading these tips you may start seeing onions a little different.

Here are alternative uses of onions you did not know

1 Use as a natural pesticide: Whip up an effective insect and animal repellent for the flowers and vegetables in your garden. In a blender, puree 4 onions, 2 cloves garlic, 2 tablespoons cayenne pepper, and 1 quart water (1 liter). Set the mixture aside. Now dilute 2 tablespoons soap flakes in 2 gallons (7.5 liters) water. Pour in the contents of your blender, shake or stir well, and you have a potent, environment-friendly solution to spray on your plants

2 Preserve Avocados . Prevent your avocados from browning by storing them in a plastic airtight container with red onions. Place half of an onion in the container first, skin side up, and then place the avocado

3. sooth Bee sting – If you are ever stung by a bee, grab an onion slice and place it on the stung area. It will instantly ease the pain.

4 Eliminate new paint smell – Is the smell of new paint making you feel too lightheaded? Rather than purchasing expensive deodorizer, place a bowl of freshly cut onion slices in water in the newly painted room. The smell of onions will absorb the smell of paint within a few hours.

5 Clean Rusty Knives. Have rusty knives laying around that you are afraid to use? Take your knife and stab it into a large onion; this action will immediately remove rust

6.Relieve muscle cramps: Boil onion skins for 10-20 minutes making an infusion. Drain the skins from the water and drink it as a tea before bed to help relieve muscle cramps.

7. Induce sleep: As a natural sleep aid, brew up a cup of onion skin tea. Simply pour boiling water over several onion skins, cover and let soak for fifteen minutes. Strain the tea (or use a tea ball) and enjoy.

8.Hair dye: Onion skins also make a great hair dye, turning it a beautiful golden brown. Simply add onion skins to a pot of water and boil for 30-60 minutes. Let cool overnight, then strain and pour over clean hair. Leave in for 30 minutes, then rinse.
