A family confrontation in Mowlem, Nairobi East, has ended in tragedy after a 66-year-old man died following an alleged altercation with his son.

Police have arrested the deceased’s 28-year-old son as detectives investigate the circumstances surrounding his father’s death.
The deceased, identified as James Hunja Macharia, reportedly died after sustaining serious head injuries during an incident at the family home on Friday, October 2, 2026.
The disturbing case came to the attention of police after the deceased’s brother reported the death, raising concerns that Hunja may have been assaulted before his death.
Police officers subsequently visited the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital mortuary, where they examined the body and established that the elderly man had sustained several injuries to his head. The injuries are being treated as potentially significant in determining the circumstances that led to his death.
Investigators then turned their attention to the family home in Mowlem, where they established that Hunja had been involved in a confrontation with his son earlier that day.
According to the preliminary police account, the confrontation escalated, with the son allegedly pushing his father.
The push reportedly caused Hunja to fall, resulting in a serious head injury.
In his account to investigators, the son reportedly said that his father regained consciousness after the incident. However, Hunja later complained of a headache, raising concern among family members about his condition.
He was subsequently taken to Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital for medical attention.
But the situation took a devastating turn.
Hunja was reportedly pronounced dead on arrival at the hospital.
What initially appeared to be a family disagreement has now become a homicide investigation as detectives work to establish whether the injuries sustained during the confrontation directly caused the 66-year-old’s death.
The arrest of his son has added another painful dimension to the tragedy, leaving relatives facing the loss of a family member while waiting for investigators to establish exactly what happened inside the home.
Police have continued gathering evidence from the scene and are expected to rely on medical findings, witness statements and the circumstances surrounding the confrontation to determine the next course of action.
The deceased’s body was preserved at the Mama Lucy Kibaki Hospital mortuary as investigations continued.
The 28-year-old suspect remained in police custody pending further investigations and his expected arraignment in court.
Authorities have not indicated that the suspect has been convicted of any offence, and the allegations against him will have to be tested through the legal process.
A post-mortem examination is also expected to provide crucial information regarding the exact cause of Hunja’s death and the extent of the injuries he suffered.
For the family, the incident has left behind a painful chain of unanswered questions: What exactly happened during the confrontation? How severe was Hunja’s fall? And did the injuries sustained during the incident ultimately cause his death?
As detectives continue piecing together the events of that Friday afternoon, a family disagreement that allegedly began inside a Nairobi home has left one man dead and another in police custody.
