SIR ALEX FERGUSON REVEALS CHOICE TO REPLACE OLE GUNNAR AT MAN UTD

ir Alex Ferguson wants Mauricio Pochettino to be the next Manchester United manager if the Red Devils decide to sack club legend Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, according to reports

Mauricio Pochettino remains their ‘number one choice’ to become manager. The Daily Star suggest that the ‘original plan’ at Old Trafford was for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘to act as a bridge between Jose Mourinho before Pochettino arrived’. The bridge has been far longer than initially intended but the destination could be the same.

Man Utd legend Sir Alex Ferguson has always spoken glowingly of Mauricio Pochettino, who has been tipped to succeed Jose Mourinho.

Mauricio Pochettino and Sir Alex Ferguson met each other on the touchline on just one occasion – but the Argentine certainly left his mark on the United legend.

So much so, following Sir Alex’s retirement in 2013, the pair struck up a close friendship and went on to share a bottle of Brunello di Montalcino red wine at a Mayfair restaurant.

It was at that meeting, two years ago, where Sir Alex detailed how he had to restructure everything at United when he took over and reassured Pochettino about his own path at Spurs. Was it any wonder that Pochettino went on to read Sir Alex’s book, ‘Leadership’?

Pochettino later described the lunch as a ‘dream come true’ and referred to Sir Alex as a ‘very special person’. The Spurs manager even paid for the meal after the Scot challenged him to name Argentina’s goal scorers in the 1930 World Cup final win against Uruguay. Which he duly did.

It is far easier said than done, considering Pochettino has two years left on his PSG contract and is managing Kylian Mbappe, Neymar and Lionel Messi every week. Things have not gone smoothly for the former Tottenham manager in France but he sits top of Ligue Un and their Champions League group.

With ‘boardroom doubts’ surrounding Conte and his ‘defensive style of play’, as well as suspicions over whether Zinedine Zidane is ‘the hands-on manager’ needed for a ‘significant rebuild’, Pochettino is the favourite and ‘the choice of Sir Alex’. And his backing of David Moyes and Solskjaer has gone incredibly well.

Despite the speculation, there remains a fair chance that Solskjaer will see out this difficult period and last the season, with Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher claiming Manchester United are ‘terrified’ of making a change.
