According to the latest research conducted by Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS) 2017  in collaboration with Society for International Development (SID), Nairobi County is the richest county while Turkana County is the poorest of all the 47 Counties.

The report also shows that Kenya’s overall poverty level has fallen for the first time in 10 years, though the drop is minimal.
For instance in richest county in Kenya – Nairobi, two in 10 people live in absolute poverty and cannot afford Sh 2,913 per month. In Turkana,the poorest county in Kenya, 88 percent of the people are unable to afford Sh 1,562 per month.

From the data, it emerges that the country’s resources are largely in the hands of a few rich people, a majority of them in the urban areas.

Counties that are home to large towns, those that are agriculturally rich and those that attract tourists fair well in the rankings. They include Nairobi, Kiambu, Lamu, Nyeri, Nakuru, Mombasa, Kericho and Narok.

The report reveals that most counties are still predominantly rural. Only five counties have half of their population living in urban areas while the rest have at least 80 per cent of their people living in rural areas.
