The Jaramogi Oginga Odinga family is no doubt one of the most successful families in Kenya today.
Besides producing a political giant in ODM leader Raila Odinga, the family of Kenya’s first Vice President also boasts having academic giants like the former Prime Minister’s elder brother, Dr Oburu Oginga.
Dr Oginga is an economist by profession and holds a PhD in Economics from Russia
Because of their involvement in the country’s politics, Raila and Dr Oburu are Jaramogi’s most famous children.
Having served as Kisumu Deputy Governor during the time of Jack Ranguma, Ruth Odinga is perhaps Raila’s most famous sister. But there is another one who is an academic powerhouse. Her name is Wenwa Akinyi.
Dr Akinyi is a renowned Chemist and has spent decades as a lecturer at the University of Nairobi. She rose through the ranks to the position of a senior lecturer at the institution.
According to multiple sources, Dr Akinyi is the first Kenyan woman to graduate with a PhD in Chemistry.
For his undergraduate degree,she was educated at the University of Nairobi before moving to Germany for her Masters and PhD degrees.
During the Grand Coalition Government between Raila and President Mwai Kibaki, Dr Akinyi worked for the Kenyan consulate in Los Angeles, California, USA.
She would later return home following the expiry of her term and rejoined the University of Nairobi.
Throughout her time in the world of academics, Dr Akinyi has also served the country in different capacities including as a member of various Government institution boards.
So influential that Dr Akinyi is that she is reportedly behind some of Raila’s key political decisions.
