Al-Qaeda-backed Islamist insurgents Alshabab claimed to have killed 63 Kenyan soldiers in an attack on an AfricanUnion military base in southwestern Somalia and captured the town of El-Adde near the border withKenya.The photos of the bodies of KDF soldiers have been roaming in Street after yet another huge blow to Kenyan gorvenment.
The battle lasted for about three hours as KenyaDefence Forces troops tried to repel the attack,before the base was overrun, Mohamed Isaq, aresident of El-Adde, said by phone from the town.
Amisom said at the time it was verifying the number of casualties. The mission is estimated to have lost at least 1,100troops since 2009, the Nairobi-based East African newspaper reported in September.
president Uhuru Kenyatta has joined the country to mourning the attack and had this to say “Our gallant soldiers reacted swiftly to protect their camp; to protect their peace and stability that they are in Somalia to secure; and to protect our country from its enemies and their sympathisers.”
