Olive Gachara — Something is just not adding up
We have all heard about her. She is the lioness in the Lions Den, the founder and chief editor of Couture Africa Magazine, and owns a consultancy firm that specialises in brand promotion.
Firstly, huge credit to her (or not? Read on). At the age of 30, many people are yet to figure what they want to do, let alone have achieved this many accolades.
However, does this actually add up? Couture Magazine focuses on women’s fashion, and is available at a price of KES 340/-. Despite all the fame Gachara has gathered with her name plastered all over the place, I am yet to see this publication populating shelves in major supermarkets, bookstores, and online and have got no recommendation from friends or family to look at this magazine. The apparatus to buy this magazine online is clunky and difficult, and I doubt there is much in way of sales through this channel. A quick flip through also suggests very few adverts, and a couple of sponsored products if any.
She claims to have a consultancy firm, Image with Olive. She further claims to have some top multinationals as her clients, and she consults on brand management. Nothing wrong with this, except that she does not have a website, and her Facebook page is littered with quotes and sayings which are basically along the lines of clothing etiquette and random sayings related to business. There is practically no evidence of her doing any actual business. Of course I could be wrong here. However, I have worked with one of the brands she claims (in some previous interview. Google is your friend here) to consult for, and I am certain that there is no way they hired her. There is absolutely no tangible evidence of any of her work, no reviews, no evidence of her having any academic qualifications, and nothing to suggest that she’s an expert in the area. The firm I worked for requires a level of professionalism that comes with being in the market for years and having a very strong brand name. Olive simply does not have this. Good consultants in Kenya are few and far between. The well known ones have a very well proven track record, numerous publications to support their work, and are regular bloggers, participate in the Twittersphere, and are generally well known enough to not have to resort to putting pointless quotes on Facebook.
A deeper look into her interviews and publications in which she has appeared suggest some disturbing trends. In one interview, she states her mantra as ‘Fake it till you become it’ (once again, Google is your friend). She has appeared on various blogs, which by their very nature are rash and will publish anything for a bit of money. It is glaringly obvious that she has paid for placement.
She certainly has very deep pockets, as she is able to invest in the Lion’s Den. This is a point that remains to be seen. As with Shark Tank and Dragon’s Den, stories come out over time and we will probably find out what transpired with the businesses she invested in. My view is that she is either being sugar rolled, or she has convinced some venture capitalists to finance her. Her parents could have bankrolled her as well, but I find that unlikely.
OLIVE GACHARA TALKS ABOUT HER JOURNEY TO SUCCESS
Meet Olive Gachara who started modelling after high school when she was aged 18 years. She then joined campus but preferred to start a modeling agency which she named Kinky. While managing the agency she was studying sales and marketing.
The journey was not simple as she explained during an interview with Shaffie Weru and Adelle Onyango in breakfast with the stars; since deferring studies in university was not an easy decision to make. People including her parents were doubting her decision but later business at the agency picked up.
“The modelling agency grew really faster, I was even shocked. So we started doing promo for events like supermarket and then producing fashion shows.” Olive said.
“Shortly I became a fashion stylish and it was easy because it was natural to me because I used to style the models, doing their portfolio and their makeup,“ she added.
