For Benard Ouma, a skilled welder from Kajulu Hills in Kisumu County, 2016 was supposed to mark the beginning of a brighter future. Instead, it became the year his life took a dramatic and painful turn, leading him from the freedom of hard work to the confines of prison.

Speaking in an interview with Itugi TV, Benard opened up about the events that altered the course of his life. At the time, he had travelled to Mombasa to take up a contract job, hoping to secure a stable income and provide a better life for his young family.
The opportunity proved rewarding. His finances improved significantly, and he felt ready to formalize his relationship with the woman he loved.
“I asked my uncle to help me buy several heads of cattle that I used to pay dowry and make our union official,” he recalled.
With his family seemingly settled, Benard focused on his work hundreds of kilometres away from home. However, while in Mombasa, disturbing reports began reaching him. Friends informed him that his wife, Esther, was allegedly involved in a romantic relationship with a man he considered one of his closest friends.
The allegations weighed heavily on him. Determined to uncover the truth, Benard returned home unexpectedly. What followed was a heated confrontation that quickly spiralled out of control.
During the altercation, Esther suffered a serious spinal injury. The incident would prove life-changing for both of them. With assistance from the man she was allegedly involved with, a case was reported to the authorities.
Soon after, police officers arrested Benard at his home and charged him with assault. The court later found him guilty and sentenced him to five years at Kodiaga Prison.
Behind bars, Benard refused to let his skills go to waste. He put his welding expertise to use, taking on various assignments within the prison. Over time, he earned a reputation for discipline and good conduct, gaining the trust of prison officers and fellow inmates alike.
He describes prison life as challenging but transformative. His commitment to good behaviour reportedly played a role in reducing his sentence, allowing him to regain hope for life beyond the prison walls.
Today, Benard reflects on the chain of events with deep regret, saying a single moment of anger cost him his freedom, his family, and several years of his life. His story serves as a powerful reminder of how quickly emotions can escalate and how the consequences can last for years.
