A female student sitting for the KCSE exam at a school in Kakamega County surprised her fellow candidates after she gave birth during exams and decided to name her baby boy after Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i.
The student, who is now being referred to as Mama Matiang’i, went into labour minutes after the CRE Paper 1 examination had kicked off.
The girl from Vinyenya Secondary School was rushed to Mabusi Health Centre in Likuyani where she delivered twins and named one of the infants Matiang’i as a way of honouring the Education CS.
In a report by the Standard, the student’s mother, Florence Wanyonyi, divulged that they decided to name one of her grandsons after Dr Matiang’i because of the exemplary work the CS had done in curbing cheating in national examinations.
Likuyani Sub-County Education Officer David Esemere said that: “Her bundle of joy came in an interval of 30 minutes and we thank God because the delivery process was successful.”
The new mother continued with her CRE paper in the hospital after the delivery.
In a similar incident reported by the Star, another student from Township Secondary School in Mandera went into labour minutes before Biology practicals paper.
