Sad details have emerged of how KDF bosses in Nairobi ignored intelligence reports on the Kulbiyow attack which has seen Kenya incur heavy casualties. The attack on Kulbiyow, a Somalia town in Lower Jubba close to the border with Kenya early Friday, January 27 left at least 60 KDF soldiers dead according to reports by the militants and another six captured by the Shabaaab.
But sad details are emerging detailing that top KDF officers were aware such an attack would take place anytime but ignored it leading to the heavy loss which saw the camp over run by the militants.
According to the Star, a KDF soldier who talked on condition of anonymity said the al-Shabaab had intended to attack the camp on January 15 to celebrate one year since the El Adde attack which left at least 100 soldiers dead.
“This is the information we received..everybody was on watch. The militants said they had an anniversary they needed to celebrate,” the soldier is quoted by the Star.
But despite dispatching the intel to the top dogs in Nairobi, no action was taken to prevent the attack, the KDF soldier said.
“We waited but nothing happened. When intelligence reports are sent, somebody somewhere delays implementation..our bosses are not working. Something fishy is going on and we have no answers,” he added.
He also blamed poor weaponry being given to the soldiers battling the al-Shabaab militants in Somalia saying the Kenya police is currently better equipped than KDF.
But KDF Spokesman Lt Col Paul Njuguna has denied that KDF ignored any intel adding that the soldiers were and are always ready.
