What do not

people know about you?

I have been writing for The Seed (a Catholic publication) for the last five years. I eat in vibandaz (shacks) and also board matatus most times. I drive myself, and despite my position I haven’t changed much.

Q: What were you doing before getting into politics?

A: I worked in a media house as a creative. My work involved turning concepts into messages that would translate into either profit or a change of behaviour as intended by clients. I did this for nine years and liked it very much.

Q: What drove you into politics?

I have always been interested in politics. I love it because this is where I feel I get to speak my mind on serious issues. Working in the media did not give me that chance. Of course, judgments are passed more harshly in politics, but again I get to speak and be remembered for what I said.

she is early 30’s

“I am a third born in a family of five and a mother of one. A journalist by profession and passionate about the arts. A devoted Christian and a very simple Kenyan from a humble background. I lost my father in 1998 and he died wanting me to be a lawyer. Am courageous, fearless but gentle and very generous.” Says Joy

Nominated Senator Joy Gwendo who recently spent the night in a police cell after failing an alcoblow test at midnight is at the centre of a love triangle involving a married man, The Nairobian can reveal.

According to a family friend who did not wish to be named, Sen Gwendo has been dating Thomas Mbewa, an affair that has strained his eight-year marriage to his wife Pauline, with his wife’s friends labeling the Senator a ‘husband snatcher’.

“Pauline (Mbewa’s wife) has not been staying with her kids for close to two months. In fact, on the day the Senator was arrested, Pauline had gone to her matrimonial home for a meeting with her husband’s relatives to square out their differences and see if the two could get back together,” our source explains.

But Mbewa, with a boldness that most men in his position could envy, not only admits he has been seeing the Senator but says he has formalised his relationship by putting his wife in the know.

“It is true I’m dating Joy and we have known each other for the last three years. It’s been an on and off relationship which my wife knows about and we decided to formalise it. We are now engaged and very soon I will call you and other members of the fourth estate for a formal marriage,” says Mbewa with authority.

His remarks come in the wake of speculations over the identity of the ‘unknown friend’ who is reported to have visited Muthaiga Police Station on the morning of Sunday, March 30, 2014 to bail out Joy after her alcoblow saga.

Forced her to move out

But the family friend who spoke to this writer denies the picture is as rosy as Mbewa claims, saying the nominated TNA Senator has caused Mbewa’s wife sleepless nights and even forced her to move out of her matrimonial home in Madaraka estate, Nairobi.

Mbewa, on the other hand, is firm that he wants his wife Pauline to stay and accept the Senator as a co-wife but acknowledges that her attempt to walk out of the marriage ‘is just the normal turbulence of women in marriage’.

It is said that you were dating a young man and dumped him for Thomas Mbewa, what is the truth about this?

You are talking about Christopher Abuor also known as OJ. This is a very good friend of mine to date. I met him while living in Kibera, he was then part of a Kibera-based CBO (Community-Based Organisation) promoting peace though value based sports (Amani Kibera) I helped them get media coverage and also sponsored three teams in their peace tournament. We became close but never dated as I was dating Thomas Mbewa at the time.

Kenya: This Easter, Nominated Senator Joy Gwendo is likely to be a little more empathetic to those arrested for failing the alcoblow breathalyser test than previous holiday seasons. The revelry around her will be a stark reminder to her surprise arrest and overnight incarceration in one of Nairobi’s police cells after she failed a similar test.

Gwendo., 29, recounts with wry humour the night of her arrest after an enjoyable evening out with friends. The second glass of wine at a Langata restaurant, Nairobi, was the poisoned chalice because 20 minutes later, she had been ignominiously hauled from the warmth and comfort of a luxurious Toyota Prado four-wheel drive vehicle into the filthy back luggage carriage of a police pick-up truck on Mbagathi Road. “I called my bodyguard and informed him that I had been arrested. I asked him to play down the incident as I sat at the back of the police pick-up,” says Gwendo. At Muthaiga Police Station, she unlike the men arrested, was allowed to step into her tiny, musty cell with shoes.

This was a welcome relief as were the humorous conversations in the men’s cells next to hers. “There were very fascinating accounts of their arrests and comical suggestions of how they would defend themselves in court,” the Senator recalls. Gwendo’s cellmate was a 25-year-old woman who had with her a five-month old baby. The woman had been arrested for stabbing her husband after a domestic brawl
