Shoe flinging occurs almost all over the world and not only in kenya. This practice is most associated with ghetto people. In united state of america shoe flinging is common.

Most of shoes flung on the lines are sneakers, sports shoes or leather boots. The shoelaces of the both shoes are tied together and thrown over the power line where they hung.

Many explanation has been given as to why this is done. Some says that the shoes in a power line is a sign of area where hard drugs are sold. Others claim that a shoe thrown on a power line is a sign to commorate a death of a gangster or a way of making gang turf.

In some neighborhoods shoes tied together and hanging on a tree branch or power line signifies that someone has died. The shoes belongs to the dead person and the reason they are hanging is that when the spirit of the dead person returns it will walk that high above the ground and much closer to heaven. It’s a way of respect to the spirit of the dead.

hanging the boots in the ghetto , simply means one is out of crime.
