Activated charcoal is a black powder that is unscented and is fine in texture. It is made through heating natural sources of carbon like wood, sawdust, coconut shells in very high temperatures where it is mixed with a gas that makes it develop pores. The pores assist it absorb the chemicals and toxins. It is very different from charcoal bricks and burnt pieces of food. It is a manufactured product and thus cannot be naturally found.

  3. The powder disrupts intestinal gases and liquids and neutralizes them. They are in form of tablets only and these cannot be used to treat a poisoning. Since the activated charcoal is not absorbed into the body, it is excreted in the faeces.

  1. It may cause nausea, vomiting and constipation. Also results to black stools.
  2. People under medication should consult a doctor because the activated charcoal may interfere with the medicine absorption.
  3. It cannot clear petroleum products like oil, gasoline and paints and cleaning products.
  4. When used in food poisonings, it must be administered only in a health facility. Some may enter the lungs instead of stomach if the patient vomits in the process or is drowsy.
