The siege at Kapenguria Police Station, West Pokot County is finally over after Recce Squad officers neutralised the gunman.
The Hostage Rescue Team which was deployed to end the more than eight-hour standoff stormed the station where a suspect identified as Omar Eumond had killed five officers.
Heavy blasts were heard inside the compound as the elite officers forcefully made their way in followed by heavy gunfire.
Unconfirmed reports indicate that the shooter was a teacher at Victoria Primary School in Kacheliba, North Pokot.
Mr Omar, who had been detained at the station on suspicion of being an Al Shabaab, reportedly snatched a rifle from an officer who was opening a cell to admit more suspects. He shot and killed the security agent and later turned on others who were on duty.
According to West Pokot County Commissioner Wilson Wanyanga, the station’s OCS, Vitalis Ochido, was among the officers killed in the crossfire.
Police officers in the area arrived to take guard at the station as the lone shooter kept firing indiscriminately to bar them from making any progress.
