Twins are more likely to be born early, often before 38 weeks, so it’s important to understand your birth options. Less than half of all twin pregnancies last beyond 37 weeks.
Because of the likelihood that your babies will be born early, there is a good chance one or both of them will spend some time in special care.
A baby born in Hong Kong was pregnant with her own siblings at the time of her birth, according to a new report of the infant’s case. The baby’s condition, known as fetus-in-fetu, is incredibly rare, occurring in only about 1 in every 500,000 births. It’s not clear exactly why it happens.
The newborn baby was referred to Dr. Yu Kai-man, an obstetrician and gynecologist at Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Hong Kong, because the baby was suspected to have a tumor, according to the case report. The mother’s prenatal ultrasound had revealed an unusual mass within the infant, but it was unclear to the doctors exactly what the mass was. During surgery, which was done when the girl was about 3 weeks old, the surgeons discovered two fetuses between her liver and her kidney.
Fetus-in-fetu was first documented in a British medical journal in 1808. It has since been recorded in births in India, Singapore, and Indonesia.
It is thought that the condition affects approximately one in half a million live births across the globe.
Doctors had been concerned that if they did not remove the foetus from the baby, that it would have continued to grow and damaged the infant’s internal organs. however, their development couldn’t proceed normally.
