Don Otieno is a Kenyan man who went to the US to study and look for greener pastures but things did not end well for him. In an interview with Lynn Ngugi, he revealed that he overstayed his visa because he did not want to come back to Kenya. He had gotten used to living in the US and he wanted to make it his home.
Unfortunately, the immigration department learnt about his illegal stay in the country and they picked him from work not long after he had bought a house. He was detained for a month and given options to either appeal to remain in the country or be deported back to Kenya. He chose to be deported and that is how he left everything and came back to Kenya empty handed after 12 years.
Before being caught by the immigration, Don had met and fallen in love with a lady called Cynthia Wambui. They communicated through letters for the one month he was in detention and continued talking via Skype after he was deported.
Don then took a chance and asked Cynthia when she would be coming to Kenya to see him although he was not sure she would agree. After some time of thinking Cynthia decided to fly to Kenya after six months for good. She sacrificed her good life in the US by giving up on her work and selling everything then came back to Kenya because of Don.
Don said that he was looking forward to do life with Cynthia by faith because he had no money and no job, just trusting in God. Cynthia on the other hand loved Don the way he was and a month after she arrived he proposed and she said yes.
After the wedding they started life from scratch. Cynthia was lucky to get a job first and she supported Don till he managed to start his own business. They have been married for 12 years and are blessed with two daughters, a ten year old and a nine year old. Their love story is an inspiration that marriage works and supporting each other as a couple makes it last.
