A Nairobi man has landed in police custody after allegedly masquerading as a police officer and using the false identity to intimidate and extort unsuspecting members of the public along Jogoo Road.

The suspect, identified as Augustine Mjomba Mwadime, was arrested at DC Stage following a public tip-off that reportedly alerted officers to his suspicious activities.
According to preliminary police reports, the suspect had allegedly been presenting himself as a serving police officer, using the title and appearance of an officer to convince members of the public that he had the authority to arrest or deal with them.
When officers from Jogoo Road Police Station confronted him, he reportedly introduced himself as Sergeant Augustine Mjomba Mwadime.
He further claimed that he was attached to the General Service Unit (GSU) Training School in Embakasi, Nairobi, seemingly attempting to establish credibility and avoid suspicion.
However, his explanation reportedly raised questions among the officers, prompting them to conduct a search to establish whether he was genuinely a member of the National Police Service.
What followed allegedly exposed an elaborate attempt to impersonate a law enforcement officer.
During the search, officers reportedly recovered a certificate of appointment suspected to be forged. The document allegedly contained a fictitious police service number and was believed to have been used by the suspect to support his claims of being a serving officer.
Police also recovered a pair of handcuffs and two keys, items that investigators believe may have been used to make his alleged impersonation appear more convincing.
The recovery of the items raised further questions about how long the suspect had allegedly been operating and whether there were other people who might have fallen victim to his activities.
Police are expected to establish whether he used the fake police identity to demand money from members of the public, threaten arrests or intimidate individuals along the busy Jogoo Road corridor.
Following his arrest, Mwadime was escorted to Jogoo Road Police Station, where he was placed in custody as officers commenced the necessary processing ahead of his expected arraignment in court.
The arrest has also drawn attention to the growing concerns surrounding individuals who allegedly exploit the authority and reputation of security agencies for personal gain.
Members of the public are regularly encouraged to remain vigilant when approached by people claiming to be police officers, particularly when such individuals demand money or threaten them with arrest without following established procedures.
Genuine police officers are expected to identify themselves and operate within the law. Anyone who suspects that an individual is impersonating an officer can report the matter to the nearest police station.
For investigators, the next step will be establishing the full extent of the suspect’s alleged activities and determining whether additional individuals were affected.
The suspect remains innocent until proven guilty by a court of law.
