Meru Governor Mutuma M’Ethingia has paid an emotional tribute to Matthew Kaugiria, a lorry driver whose extraordinary bravery helped avert a potentially devastating tragedy after his hay-loaded truck caught fire in Meru town.

Kaugiria risked his life to protect members of the public when his vehicle burst into flames along the Kwa Nthambi–Majengo road on Friday, October 23, 2026. Instead of abandoning the burning lorry, he reportedly steered it away from the populated area and towards River Kathita in an attempt to contain the danger.
His courageous decision has earned him widespread admiration, with Governor Mutuma describing him as a true hero whose selfless actions demonstrated the value of putting other people’s lives before one’s own safety.
In a Facebook post published on Sunday, October 25, the governor celebrated the driver’s bravery, noting that his actions could have prevented a disaster in an area surrounded by businesses, residential buildings and pedestrians.
“NOT ALL HEROES WEAR CAPES. SOME RISK THEIR LIVES TO SAVE OTHERS,” Mutuma wrote.
The governor added that true heroism should not be measured by material possessions or personal achievements, but by the willingness to protect others when their lives are in danger.
“True heroism is not measured by what we possess, but by the courage we demonstrate when the lives and safety of others are at stake,” he stated.
Lorry Turns Into a Moving Fireball
According to the account shared by the governor, Kaugiria was transporting a heavy load of dry hay across Meru County when the cargo came into contact with low-hanging overhead electricity lines.
The contact reportedly triggered a fire that quickly engulfed the hay, turning the lorry into a moving fireball along the busy road.
The rapidly spreading flames presented a serious danger to the driver and other road users, particularly given the presence of businesses, residential buildings and members of the public in the surrounding area.
With the fire threatening to cause further destruction, Kaugiria faced a split-second decision that could determine the safety of many people.
Rather than jump out of the vehicle and leave it moving uncontrollably, the experienced driver reportedly remained behind the wheel and steered the burning lorry away from the populated area.
He directed the vehicle towards River Kathita and drove it into the water in an attempt to extinguish the flames and prevent the fire from spreading further.
The daring manoeuvre, however, came at a painful personal cost.
Driver Suffers Burns in Daring Rescue
During the incident, Kaugiria sustained burns to his face and right hand as he battled to control the burning vehicle.
The veteran driver, who reportedly has 17 years of driving experience, was subsequently rescued and taken to hospital for medical treatment.
Although his actions placed him in grave danger, his decision to direct the lorry towards the river rather than abandon it has been praised as an extraordinary act of courage.
Governor Mutuma acknowledged the personal sacrifice Kaugiria made, noting that the driver had put himself at risk while trying to protect the surrounding community.
“Rather than abandon the burning lorry, Mathew courageously drove it towards Kathita River, averting a potentially devastating tragedy and protecting the surrounding community. In his selfless act, he sustained burns to his face and arms,” the governor wrote.
The incident has also drawn attention to the dangers posed by low-hanging electricity lines, particularly along roads used by heavy commercial vehicles transporting bulky cargo.
‘The Flames May Have Consumed His Livelihood, but Not His Courage’
In his tribute, Mutuma praised Kaugiria for demonstrating courage, sacrifice and concern for the safety of others at a moment when panic could easily have taken over.
The governor also offered prayers for the driver’s recovery, describing his actions as worthy of recognition and admiration.
“I celebrate Mathew for his remarkable courage, sacrifice and concern for the safety of others. My prayers are with him as he recovers from his injuries,” Mutuma stated.
He concluded with an emotional message that captured the significance of the driver’s actions.
“The flames may have consumed his livelihood, but they could never consume his courage. Mathew Kaungiria, Meru salutes you!” he added.
A Heroic Act That Has Touched Meru Residents
Kaugiria’s actions have highlighted the extraordinary decisions ordinary people sometimes make when confronted with life-threatening situations.
As a lorry driver transporting hay for business, he was carrying out his daily work when the unexpected fire transformed an ordinary journey into a dangerous emergency.
Yet, faced with the possibility of a burning vehicle causing destruction in a busy part of Meru town, he reportedly chose a course of action that prioritised the safety of those around him.
His injuries serve as a painful reminder of the personal risks involved in his decision, while the governor’s tribute has brought renewed attention to his sacrifice.
The incident has also underscored the importance of ensuring that overhead electricity lines are safely positioned to reduce the risk of contact with tall vehicles and bulky cargo.
For now, as Kaugiria receives medical attention, Governor Mutuma’s message reflects the gratitude of a community moved by the driver’s bravery.
His story is a powerful reminder that heroism is not always displayed on a battlefield or in dramatic acts witnessed by millions. Sometimes, it emerges on an ordinary road, when one person makes a courageous decision in an attempt to save others.
For his remarkable act of bravery, Matthew Kaugiria has earned a place in the hearts of many Meru residents as a man who risked everything to protect the lives of others.
