Grief has overwhelmed the family of Olive Nyambura, a Grade 8 learner at St Teresa’s Girls Primary School, after the teenager went to sleep in perfect health but failed to wake up the next morning.

Sources say Olive exhibited no signs of sickness before going to bed, leaving her family, teachers and schoolmates stunned by the sudden loss. Concern arose when multiple attempts to rouse her in the morning were unsuccessful, leading to an urgent call for medical help.
The incident has stirred numerous questions within the family and the school community, as many struggle to comprehend how a child who appeared completely healthy could pass away in her sleep. By the time of reporting, the exact cause of her death had not yet been established.
Authorities later transferred Olive’s body for further medical analysis as efforts continue to uncover what might have led to her sudden death. A postmortem examination is expected to shed more light on the matter and help experts determine whether any underlying health issues were involved.
The tragedy has left a profound emotional impact on students and staff at the Nyeri-based boarding school. Classmates remembered Olive as gentle, sociable and diligent in her studies. Condolence messages from community members have been pouring in as burial preparations get underway.
The case has also reignited discussions about student health and safety in Kenyan boarding schools, particularly in light of other recent incidents involving learners across the country.
Previous school-related tragedies in Nyeri County had already raised nationwide concern over learner welfare and the effectiveness of emergency response measures. Olive’s family is now awaiting the results of the medical investigations, hoping the findings will finally clarify the circumstances behind the mysterious death that has left the entire school community grieving.
