2 Boys headed for graduation die in accident

What was supposed to be one of the happiest days of their lives turned into an unimaginable tragedy after two Great Zimbabwe University students lost their lives in a horrific road accident while travelling to attend their graduation ceremony.

Tatenda and Max Matirwadza were among three students travelling from Harare to Masvingo on October 22, 2026, looking forward to celebrating years of hard work, sacrifice and determination. However, their dreams of celebrating this important milestone were tragically cut short when the vehicle they were travelling in collided with a truck.

The heartbreaking incident has left the university community and those who knew the students mourning the loss of two young lives that held so much promise.

For Tatenda and Max, the journey was meant to mark the beginning of a new chapter. After years of attending lectures, completing assignments and working towards their academic goals, graduation was supposed to be the moment they could proudly celebrate their achievements with friends, lecturers and loved ones.

Instead, their journey ended in tragedy, leaving behind grief and unanswered questions about the circumstances surrounding the fatal crash.

According to the information shared about the incident, the three students were travelling towards Masvingo when their vehicle crashed into a truck ahead of them. Investigators are still working to establish exactly what happened before the collision.

It remains unclear whether the truck had suddenly applied its brakes or was stationary when the vehicle struck it from behind.

The impact was devastating, leaving the car badly mangled and trapping all three occupants inside the wreckage.

Emergency responders rushed to the scene, where firefighters were forced to cut through the twisted metal to rescue the occupants. The operation was reportedly challenging as rescuers worked to reach the trapped students and pull them from the wreckage.

Despite the desperate rescue efforts, Tatenda and Max were declared dead after being removed from the wrecked vehicle.

The third student survived the crash but was reportedly rescued in critical condition. No further information about the student’s recovery had been provided at the time of reporting.

News of the tragedy was first shared by Crime Watch ZW on X, formerly known as Twitter, triggering an outpouring of sorrow and disbelief among social media users.

Many people expressed sadness over the painful circumstances surrounding the deaths, noting that the students had been on their way to celebrate an achievement that represented years of dedication and perseverance.

Great Zimbabwe University Vice Chancellor Professor Mazuru Zvobgo also publicly mourned the two students, acknowledging the profound loss suffered by the institution and everyone who knew them.

Their deaths serve as a painful reminder of how quickly life can change. A journey that begins with excitement and anticipation can, in a matter of moments, become a source of unimaginable sorrow for families and friends.

The tragedy also brings to mind a similar heartbreaking incident in Kenya involving Cynthia Cherotich, a newly commissioned administration police officer who reportedly died in a road accident shortly after completing her training. She had been travelling home to celebrate the milestone with her family when the crash occurred.

Like Cynthia, Tatenda and Max were heading towards a moment that should have brought immense pride and happiness to their loved ones.

Instead, their families are left facing the devastating reality of losing loved ones at a time when they should have been celebrating their achievements.

As the university community mourns the two students, questions surrounding the circumstances of the accident remain, with investigators expected to establish what led to the fatal collision.

For Tatenda and Max, graduation will forever remain an unfulfilled dream. Their story is a painful reminder that behind every academic achievement are years of sacrifice, the hopes of families and dreams of a brighter future.

May their families, friends and the entire Great Zimbabwe University community find strength and comfort during this difficult time.
